Exhaustion, or How to Think about the Location of Meaning

The subject of this introductory session to the theme “Coder le monde” (Coding the World) is to draw up an epistemological and historical perspective of the relationships—both fundamental to and dependent on the evolution of techniques; binding code and art, reason and imaginary, symbol and meaning, human and machine.

2:30pm | Coding the Body

Led by Sarah Fdili Alaoui, Artiste and Assistant Professor, Université Paris Saclay
With Rocio Berenguer, Artist, and Art Director of Pulso
Scott deLahunta, Co-Director Motion Bank, Researcher at Coventry (C-DaRE) and Deakin University
Marc Downie, Digital Artist, OpenEndedGroup
Pierre Godard, Artist and Art Director of Le principe d'incertitude
Christian Mio Loclair, Artist and Choreographer, Creative Director at Waltz binaire
Chris Salter, Artist and Professor at Concordia University in Montréal
Liz Santoro, Dancer and Art Director of Le principe d'incertitude

Associating artists and researchers with interfaces between dance and digital technologies, this panel discussion questions the basis of technology in choreographic creation. How did this hybridization affect the processes of creation and the methods of research in computer science? What common language has emerged through these collaborations? What are the technological challenges connected to the complexity of danced movement and its lived and experimental quality?

4pm | Artificial Intelligence and Generativity

Led by Bertrand Braunschweig, Director of the INRIA Center at Saclay Île de France
With Philippe Esling, Lecturer, Sorbonne Université, IRCAM-STMS
Claire Giraudin, Director of Sacem Université
Daniele Ghisi, Composer and Mathematician
François Pachet, Director of Creator Technology Research Lab, Spotify

Operating by learning a corpus of massive data—sounds, images, texts—the current algorithms for artificial intelligence provide unparalleled power for the production of artefacts with a credibility so troubling that their operation is misunderstood. What are their limits and do they put the status of author as it is today in peril? Does their control imply new heuristics for artistic creation?
